UNI Earns Three-Seed at MVC Tournament

The University of Northern Iowa softball team clinched the three-seed at the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament with a win over Illinois State Sunday afternoon. The MVC Tournament will take place May 12-14 in Carbondale, Ill., on the campus of Southern Illinois University, where the top eight teams in the conference will square off. All the tournament games can be viewed live on ESPN3.

The Panthers (38-18, 16-10 MVC) won the second-most games in program history this year, tying the number set by the 2012 MVC regular-season champion team. UNI set program records in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, runs scored, home runs, and walks while leading the MVC in 11 different offensive categories.

UNI will take on the winner of the Thursday, May 12 contest between six-seed Evansville and seven-seed Illinois State. The Panthers and winner will play later in the day on Thursday, with first pitch scheduled for 6:34 p.m. UNI earned series wins over both the Aces and the Redbirds earlier in the season, winning two out of three in each.

The tournament semifinals will be played Friday, May 13, and feature the top two seeds of Wichita State and Drake against the winner of the quarterfinal games on Thursday. The MVC Championship game is scheduled for 1:04 p.m. Saturday, May 14.
