UNI Earns Split With Illinois State

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa softball team gained a split of a doubleheader witih a 5-2 win in the second game vs. Illinois State at Robinson Dresser Field.
The Panthers (37-18 overall, 15-10 MVC) pounded out 12 hits in the second game and rallied from a 2-1 deficit to earn the victory. Illinois State (18-31, 10-13 MVC) limited UNI to three hits in the opening game and the Redbirds tallied a 2-1 triumph.
GAME ONE
Illinois State starter Regan Romshek stifled the Panther bats in the opening game. Romshek tossed a three-hitter and struck out five Panthers.Â
The Panthers held a 1-0 lead in the second inning after a leadoff double from Caitlin Wnek. She moved to third on a Kennedy Bailey ground out. Wnek would score on a double to left-center by Alyssa Buchanan. But Romshek would limit the damage as the Panthers left two runners in scoring position to end the inning.
The Redbirds tied it up at 1-1 in the fourth on an RBI double by Allison Spence. The Redbirds would score the game's final run in the fifth on another RBI double from leadoff batter Annie Heineman.Â
UNI would leave Samanthan Olson stranded at third in the fifth and two more runners at second and third in the seventh.
GAME TWO
UNI's bats came alive in game two with 12 hits and five runs as Bailey Lange came on in relief of Buchanan to gain her sixth win of the season.
Illinois State staked itself to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with an RBI single from Allison Spence.Â
UNI would even it up at 1-1 in the bottom half of the first when Caitlin Wnek singled home Samantha Olson. UNI stranded a pair of runners in scoring position to end the scoring threat.
The Redbirds retook the lead in the top of the second when Regan Romshek singled home Alex Caliva with a hit through the right side of the Panther infield. Lange entered with the bases loaded and nobody out but got out of the jam by inducing a couple of flyouts to end the innings.
UNI's three-run fourth inning proved to be the difference in the game. A two-run double to right by Micalla Rettinger plated both Macey Wolfe and Brittney Krodinger to give UNI a 3-2 lead. Ross followed with an RBI single to center that scored Rettinger.Â
The Panthers added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Ross led off witn a lasered single to center that Redbird centerfielder Annie Heineman misplayed that allowed Ross to advance to second. Kate Kinnetz ran for Ross and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Wnek. Kinnetz scored the final run of the game on a Kennedy Bailey single to left field giving UNI a 5-2 lead.
Lange worked around a pair of singles from the Redbirds to lead off the seventh and the Panthers claimed their 37th win of the season. Lange pitched six innings and gave up five hits and no runs.
Rettinger went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Wolfe went 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored
UNI and Illinois State will be back in action Sunday to close the regular season. UNI will honor its senior class on Sunday.
