Baker Named MVC Field Athlete of the Week

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - University of Northern Iowa senior thrower Justin Baker has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week, it was announced today by the league office.
The Sioux City, Iowa native broke his own UNI record in the men's hammer throw for the third time this season, winning the event in a stacked field at the nationally renowned Drake Relays.
Baker turned in a new personal-best with a mark of 212-8.50, beating his previous record of 212-2.00. His mark kept him ranked at the top of the Missouri Valley and moved him into No. 7 in the NCAA West Region.
The senior has had a standout senior campaign and will look to head into the final week of regular season meets at the Wisconsin Twilight on Saturday, May 7 with the MVC Championships taking place in Terre Haute, Ind., May 13-15.
The NCAA West Preliminary Round will be held in Lawrence, Kan. at the University of Kansas. To qualify, athletes must rank in the top-48 of their respective events. Heading into this weekend, Baker is ranked No. 7 in the hammer throw and No. 7 in the shot put after another UNI record breaking performance at the Tom Botts Invite in April.
