T&F Qualifies Two For Eugene On Day 2 Of West Prelims

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Northern Iowa track and field program qualified two student-athletes for the 2016 NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships today, ending the second day of competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Round.
Justin Baker kicked off the day with another personal-best in the hammer throw and another school record to his career. He placed fifth overall in the event with a mark of 213-8.00 to clinch his spot in Eugene, Ore., June 8-11. It marks the second consecutive year that Baker has qualified in at least one event at the NCAA Championships, with him taking on the shot put tomorrow at 3 p.m.
Following suit, Brandon Carnes punched his ticket to Eugene in the 100 meter dash. He came across the finish line in third in his heat with a time of 10.33, placing 11th overall out of 48 competitors. The junior qualified for the 200 meters at last year's NCAA West Prelims last season and will look to repeat tomorrow at 12:55 p.m.
In the women's 800 meter run, both Brette Correy and Amber Clock finished in the top-30, with Correy placing fourth in her heat and 21st overall with a time of 2:08.76. Clock finished fifth in her heat with a time of 2:10.07, wrapping up an outstanding career at UNI. The senior leaves the Purple and Old Gold behind ranked No. 3 all-time at UNI in the outdoor 800 meters and No. 2 indoors while claiming both the indoor and outdoor MVC titles this year.
Maddie Beeler also finished her career as a Panther today in the women's 400 meter dash, running a time of 55.83 to finish in 37th overall and seventh in her heat. Beeler has been a staple for the Panthers in the quarter-mile, earning All-MVC honors as a member of the 4X400 meter relay in seven different meets. She is ranked No. 4 all-time in the Purple and Old Gold in the outdoor 400 after earning third place and All-Conference at the indoor and outdoor championships this season.
On the men's side, Luke Johnston finished seventh in his heat to end the year No. 39 in the NCAA West Region. He turned in a strong time of 1:52.50.
In the women's throws, Jamie Lindstrom took her last attempts at the hammer throw as a Panther, going for a mark of 176-0.00 to finish ranked No. 42. Lindstrom, who will also compete in the shot put tomorrow at 12:30 p.m., ends her season in the hammer throw ranked No. 4 all-time at UNI in the event.
Sarah Pate also competed in the hammer throw, coming away with a 32nd place finish with a toss of 185-7.00. She also took on the discus, going 152-3.00 to finish 10th in her flight before the final flight of the competition was suspended due to weather.
The Panthers will return to action for the final day of the NCAA West Preliminary Round tomorrow, starting at 9 a.m. with the men's discus. Action on the track gets underway with the 100 meter hurdles at 11:30 a.m.
