Panthers Qualify 19 For Finals At MVC Championships

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The University of Northern Iowa track and field team wrapped up the second day of competition at the MVC Outdoor Championships, earning three All-MVC honors and 19 qualifiers for tomorrow's finals.
Senior Justin Baker earned his second All-MVC recognition of the weekend, placing second overall in the shot put with a mark of 61-9.75. The Panthers ended up scoring 16 points in the men's shot put, with Brad Walski placing fifth (55-0.00, outdoor PR), Isaac Holtz in sixth (54-02.00) and Jake Humpal in seventh (53-11).
Paige Knodle continued her strong outing in the long jump today, earning a second place finish overall with her personal-best jump of 19-4.75 that ranks her No. 3 all-time at UNI. Rachel Peth added more team points to the Panther women's tally, finishing in seventh overall with a mark of 18-4.50.
Rounding out UNI's All-MVC finishes today was Chaley Rath in the women's high jump competition. Rath finished with a mark of 5-7.00.
Moving onto the track, the Panthers had six student-athletes qualify for tomorrow's hurdle finals in the 100 and 110 meters. Paige Knodle ran the second fastest qualifying time for the women in the 100 meter hurdles, coming in at 13.50 for a wind legal Gibson Track record followed by Rachel Peth in 13.77 and Christine MacNeill in 13.93. Jon Rus turned in the fastest time for the UNI men in the 110 meter hurdles at 14.10 along with Daurice Fountain in 14.36 and freshman Cole Phillips claiming the final qualifying spot in 14.41.
Staying in the hurdles, Knodle, Jennifer Roberts and Raheem Black competed in the 400 meter hurdle preliminary race today, earning spots in the finals. Knodle ran a time of 1:01.10 to finish second in her heat while Roberts came in at 1:01.49. On the men's side, Black finished second in his heat, running a personal-best time of 52.69.
The Panthers qualified two athletes for the 400 meter dash, with Maddie Beeler and Corey Hertz both earning spots in the finals. Beeler ran the third fastest time in the preliminary race for the women, winning her heat with a time of 55.39. Hertz also recorded a fast time in the men's race, running a personal-best time of 48.23 to qualify.
Brandon Carnes posted the fastest preliminary time in the men's 100 meter dash, coming across the finish line in a headwind in 10.34 to earn his spot in the finals tomorrow. Carnes will also take part in the 200 meter dash finals on Sunday after his qualifying time of 20.84 in the preliminaries on Friday.
In the middle distance races, UNI secured seven spots in tomorrow's 800 meter run finals between the men's and women's races. Amber Clock (2:11.83), Brette Correy (2:14.03), Ashley Norem (2:14.03) and Lindsey Kite (2:11.02) all qualified on the women's side while Jordan Pingel (1:52.95), Luke Johnston (1:54.29) and Colynn Black (1:52.56) will represent the men.
In the second day of the heptathlon competition, Rachel Peth finished in fourth overall, earning team points for the Panthers. She started the day with a fourth place finish in the long (17-8.50), followed by a throw of 111-6.00 in the javelin and time of 2:45.08 in the 800 meters for 5,029 points. Lauren Frederick finished her heptathlon with a personal-best 4,657 points after scoring a personal-best in the long jump (17-3.25) and winning the 800 meters with a time of 2:23.41.
For the decathlon, Austin Heitland finished in seventh place overall in his first MVC Championship to earn team points with a personal-best 5,871 points. He started the day with a time of 17.56 in the 110 hurdles, followed by a toss of 95-4.00 in the discus. He gained a mark of 10-06 in the pole vault, followed by a throw of 116-09 in the javelin. He finished the competition with a big win in the 1,500 meter run to move up a spot with his time of 4:50.70.
Wrapping up the day on the track was another point-scoring performance for the Panther men, ending in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Bailey Wetherell finished in eighth place overall in the race, finishing with a time of 9:16.73 for a huge personal-best time.
The Panthers will return to action tomorrow on the final day of competition at the MVC Championships, starting at 11 a.m. CT on the field and noon on the track. The women's team enters tomorrow in third (48 points) while the men are in fourth (31 points) through eight events.
