UNI Scores Key Points In First Day Of Events At MVC Championships

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The University of Northern Iowa track and field program opened the first day of competition at the MVC Outdoor Championships today, earning three all-conference performances and multiple personal-bests to finish the day in the top-five in the men's and women's rankings.
Sarah Pate got the day started by finishing second overall in the women's hammer throw for All-MVC honors, throwing for a mark of 195-08 to rank second all-time at UNI. Three of UNI's four hammer throw competitors scored team points for the Panthers with Jamie Lindstrom placing fifth (183-10) and Chloe Schmidt finishing in seventh (174-02).
On the men's side, Justin Baker turned in another all-conference performance in the hammer throw, taking second overall with a toss of 206-08. Brad Walski also scored team points for the Panthers in the event, placing sixth overall with a mark of 178-01.
Paige Knodle broke her own school record in the javelin on the way to giving UNI its third all-conference performance of the day. The senior threw for a mark of 155-09 to finish second overall in the competition, beating her previous record of 151-07.
Moving onto the track, Kelsey Kirchoff scored a top-10 finish in the women's 10,000 meter run final, running the fourth fastest time in school history. Kirchoff finished in sixth place overall out of 19 runners with a time of 36:38.29.
UNI also had two athletes qualify for the finals in their respective events today with Brette Correy placing seventh in the 1,500 preliminaries and Brandon Carnes winning the 200 meter prelims. Correy ran a time of 4:32.93 to earn her spot in the finals while Carnes posted a time of 20.86 in the 200 meter dash to send him into the finals and set a new Gibson Track record.
In the multis, Rachel Peth finished the first day of competition in first place in the heptathlon (3,289 points) with Lauren Frederick sitting in ninth (2,883 points). True freshman Austin Heitland is also sitting high in the men's rankings in the decathlon through the first day, placing third with 3,459 points.
Peth opened the day with a win in the 100 meter hurdles, running a time of 14.00 while Frederick finished in the top-10 with a time of 14.89. In the high jump, Peth tied her personal-best of 5-7.00 to finish second overall while Frederick finished in fifth, setting a new outdoor PR of 5-2.25.
Peth set another career-best when they moved into the shot put, throwing for 36-9.00 for fifth place. Frederick added a season-best in the shot put to her performance on the day, going for a mark of 34-2.75. Finishing the day, Peth placed fifth in the 200 meters with a personal-best time of 25.43 with Frederick also posting a time of 26.46.
Heitland began his competition with a PR in the 100 meter dash, running a time of 11.17 to place fourth overall. He jumped 20-3.50 in the long jump and followed it up with a season-best in the shot put of 38-0.00 to finish fifth. The freshman ended the day with a height of 5-10.50 in the high jump and a win in the 400 meter dash (50.10) that set a Gibson Track record.
The Panthers will return to action tomorrow, starting at 10:30 a.m. with the completion of the mutli-events. Field events begin at 3 p.m. with the track events getting underway for the Panthers at 5 p.m.
