UNI Puts Together Seventh-Inning Rally, Falls to ISU 2-1

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The University of Northern Iowa softball team put together a seventh-inning rally against Illinois State on Friday afternoon, but could not push the game-tying run across as they fell to the Redbirds in the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Quarterfinals, 2-1. The Panthers (38-19) put together three hits in the bottom of the seventh inning to put pressure on the Redbirds, but left two runners stranded in scoring position.

Chelsea Ross was effective in the circle for UNI in an early pitchers' duel with ISU's Regan Romshek as she held the Redbirds hit-less for the opening 3.2 innings. The senior finished with eight strikeouts on the day while allowing just one earned run.

ISU opened up the scoring in scoring in the top of the sixth inning beginning with back-to-back singles before Riley Strandgard plated a run on a RBI single to left field. The Redbirds would add to their lead in the seventh as they scored on a RBI infield single on a close play at the play from Annie Heineman.

Ross tallied her second hit of the day as she left off the bottom of the second with a single to left field to start the UNI rally. Kennedy Bailey just missed a one-out home run, hitting the wall in left center field for a double to put two Panthers in scoring position. Alyssa Buchanan drove the lone UNI run of the day across the plate, scoring a pinch-running Kate Kinnetz to cut the Redbird lead to one. UNI could not push the game-extending run across the plate as back-to-back fly-outs ended the inning.

The Panthers finished the season with 38 wins, ranking second all-time at UNI for program wins in a season.
