UNI Ready For MVC Outdoor Championships, May 13-15

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa track and field program is set for the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, May 13-15. The meet is hosted by Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind. at the Gibson Track and Field Complex.

The meet will air live on The Valley on ESPN3 on Friday, May 13 (5:50-7:30 p.m.), Saturday, May 14 (3:45-6:15 p.m.) and Sunday, May 15 (11:55 a.m. – 3:15 p.m.). Fans can also follow along with live results provided by the MVC Outdoor Championship Central Page.

On the men's side, the Panthers have six athletes competing this weekend that earned All-MVC at the 2015 outdoor meet, including Brandon Carnes who will look to defend his 100 and 200 meter dash titles this weekend. Rachel Peth will also look to take the reins for the women in the heptathlon for the second year in a row after winning the event in 2015.

In the field, Justin Baker and Shawn Koch have both had standout seasons in the throws and jumps and will look to improve on their finishes from 2015. Baker, who is currently ranked in the top-10 in the NCAA West with school records in the shot put and hammer throw, earned second place in the shot put in Normal, Ill. last year while Koch placed second in both the long and triple jump. Koch has shined in the triple jump in 2016, ranking himself No. 25 in the triple jump in the West Region after his jump of 50-7.50.

Both Sarah Pate and Jamie Lindstrom scored team points in 2015 in the throws competition, and will look to place high this year after strong seasons in the shot put, hammer throw and discus. Lindstrom holds a personal-best of 50-9.25 in the shot put that ranks her in the top-3 in the Valley and top-48 in the West while Pate jumped on the UNI all-time list in the hammer and discus last weekend with tosses of 191-10 and 163-6 to push her into the top-48 in the region in both.

Paige Knodle will headline the Panthers in the javelin as well as taking on the long jump after earning All-MVC in the event during the indoor season. Knodle will also look for an individual title in the women's 100 meter hurdles after setting a school record in the event of 13.26 just months after setting a UNI and MVC record in the 60 meter hurdles at the indoor championships for the win.

Jon Rus, who finished second in the men's 110 hurdles at last year's meet, holds a personal-best in the event of 14.01, ranking him No. 2 in the Valley heading into this weekend. He will be joined in the hurdles in Terre Haute by Cole Phillips and Daurice Fountain, with Fountain looking to capitalize on his All-Conference performance during the indoor season.

Maddie Beeler earned her first All-MVC honors in the open 400 this past indoor season and enters the meet ranked No. 2 in the MVC with a personal-best time of 54.51, the fourth fastest time in school history.

Moving into the middle distance races, the Panthers have six athletes between the men and women ranked in scoring position heading into the weekend. Brette Correy and Amber Clock lead the way after running the second and third best times in school history this season in the 800 meters, ranking No. 28 and No. 31 in the NCAA West Region, respectively.

Altogether, UNI will be bringing 32 men and 32 women to Terre Haute in search for a championship. The Panthers enter the meet with 19 men and 12 women ranked in the top-8 in the MVC this season in 13 and 12 events, respectively.
