CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa softball team earned a 3-2 victory over in-state rival Iowa State on Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers (25-11) got solid work out of freshman Bailey Lange in the circle as she allowed just one earned run and struck out a career-high eight batters in her first seven-inning complete game.

Lange got help from the Panther offense after tossing back-to-back innings where she retired the Cyclone batters in order.

Courtney Krodinger leadoff the second inning with a single up the middle before eventually scoring the first run of the day on a wild pitch. Caitlin Wnek reached on an error with two-outs, scoring Anna Varriano in the process to give the Panthers a 2-0 advantage. Wnek finished the day 2-3 at the plate while reaching base three times.

The Cyclones answered with a run of their own in the fourth to cut the UNI lead to one, scoring Katie Dukes after she advanced to second and third via a passed ball and wild pitch.

Micalla Rettinger started the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff single, her second hit of the day, before scoring on a Wnek single that got away from the ISU left fielder to give UNI a 3-1 lead.

ISU would cut the lead down to one in the following inning again after a leadoff walk.

Lange locked in over the last two innings after surrendering one run per inning over the last two, striking out four of the eight hitters she faced in the final moments of the contest.

The Panthers will get back into Missouri Valley Conference play this weekend when they travel to Peoria, Ill. to take on Bradley. Game one of the doubleheader Saturday is scheduled for noon.
