UNI Takes Game One Pitcher's Duel, Falls in Game Two

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The University of Northern Iowa softball split a pair of games against Southern Illinois on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Salukis 1-0 in a pitcher's duel before falling in five innings in game two, 8-0. The Panthers' (36-16, 14-8 MVC) split puts them into a tie for second in the Missouri Valley Conference with in-state opponent Drake, who UNI holds the tiebreaker against having won the season series 2-1.
Chelsea Ross (15-6) pitched a gem in game one of the day as she came out on top in the pitcher's duel against SIU freshman Brianna Jones. Ross struck out 10 batters on the day while allowing just three hits and walking two. The senior extended her shutout streak against the Salukis to three games dating back to last season.
Caitlin Wnek drove in the lone run of the day for the Panthers in the top of the sixth inning, hitting a RBI double to left-center field to score Bailey Lange from second base and put UNI ahead 1-0.
SIU threatened to tie things up in the bottom half of the seventh inning as a runner reached on a leadoff single. Ross tightened the grip after allowing the leadoff base hit, getting the next two batters to popup on consecutive pitches before striking out the final batter of the game.
UNI struggled to produce offense in game two as Samantha Olson's two singles marked the Panthers only two hits of the doubleheader finale.
The Salukis plated their first runs of the night in the third inning, scoring on a single to left-center field to take a 2-0 lead. SIU took advantage of a few UNI miscues in the following inning as they plated five runs on five hits to go up seven before plating the game-ending run to bring the final score to 8-0.
The Panthers and Salukis will play the series-deciding game three tomorrow at noon.
