IRVING, Texas – The University of Northern Iowa football program was honored this week by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame as they announced the NFF Hampshire Honor Society members for 2016.
UNI landed three student-athletes on the list, becoming just one of 32 schools in FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III and NAIA football to have at least one athlete recognized in each of the Hampshire Honor Society's 10 years. This year, UNI is represented by Jacob Rathmacher, Savon Huggins and Isaac Ales.
The NFF Hampshire Honor Society comprises college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college career. A total of 875 players from 278 schools qualified for membership as the society celebrates its 10th year. Along with having a 3.2 GPA, student-athletes must be a starter or a significant contributor in one's last year of eligibility.
Rathmacher, who also was named to the FCS ADA Academic All-Star team, CoSIDA Academic All-America first-team and the MVFC Scholar-Athlete first-team, is a double-major in biology and biochemistry. He started all 14 games for UNI as an anchor on the offensive line, helping UNI to a school record 3,266 rushing yards and to a No. 15 final ranking in rushing offense.
Huggins, who transferred into the UNI football program for the 2015 season, finished the season with 216 rushing yards, 52 receiving yards, 154 yards on kickoff returns, totaling three touchdowns. His 154 kickoff return yards led the team this past fall, averaging 17.1 yards per return.
Ales, another CoSIDA Academic All-American and MVFC Scholar-Athlete team member from this past season, finished his career at UNI ranked No. 2 all-time in tackles for loss (42.5) and in yards from tackles for loss (179). He racked up 69 tackles in 2015, earning nine sacks and three forced fumbles.
