HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The University of Northern Iowa men's golf team completed its season Tuesday with the final round of the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Championship meet held at Prairie Dunes Country Club. The course played to a par-70 and measured 6,598 yards.
UNI senior Kyle Driscoll (Hartland, Wis.) wrapped up his collegiate playing career with a tie for 11th after scoring a final-round 78. Driscoll drained a birdie at No. 7 on Tuesday. He struggled early in his final round but found a rhythm and played one-over on his final 10 holes of play. Driscoll tallied a team-best seven birdies in the tournament. Driscoll posted a team-best 25 rounds in the 70s this season.
Junior David Spengler (Luxemburg, Wis.) completed his season on a high note as he rose seven spots on the final day to a tie for 14th with a 75. It marked the 11th time in his final 12 rounds this season that he shot 78 or better. Spengler notched a birdie at No. 7 on Tuesday. Spengler scored a season-best three-round total of 226 in the tournament.
Junior Dustin Atkinson (Ames, Iowa) shot a final-round 80 for a three-round total of 231 and a 30th-place finish.
Senior Eric Sikkema (Clinton, Iowa) secured a final-round 84 to give him a three-round score of 246 and a 43rd-place finish in the MVC Tournament. Sikkema ranked second on the team with five birdies over the 54 holes.
Senior Jacob Bermel (Cedar Falls, Iowa) finished in a tie for 44th after scoring an 83 in the final round. Bermel drained a birdie at No. 3 on Tuesday.
UNI placed eighth in the final standings with a three-round total of 925. Southern Illinois won the team title with a three-round score of 877.
At the conclusion of the meet, the league announced its All-Missouri Valley Conference honors and both Driscoll and Atkinson were named to the squad. Atkinson led the squad with a 74.50 stroke average through 30 rounds. Driscoll ranked second on the squad with a 74.53 stroke average. It marks the second straight season that Driscoll has earned All-MVC honors.
Driscoll becomes only the third UNI men's golfer to earn All-MVC honors in two seasons - joining Mike Lewis (2001, 2002, 2003) and Jordan Weber (2007, 2008).
