Weekly Named Scholar-Athlete of the Year

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Junior Madison Weekly headlines the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete first-team today after being named Eagle Bank & Trust Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Weekly, a native of Atkins, Iowa, is the second player in UNI history to be named Scholar-Athlete of the Year, joining former UNI standout Jaqui Kalin who won in 2011 and 2013. This is Weekly's second consecutive first-team selection as the fifth player in program history to earn first-team Scholar-Athlete honors, adding to the list of Brooke Brown (2015, 2014), Kalin (2013, 2011, 2010), Lizzie Boeck (2011) and Katie Miller (2003).
Weekly is majoring in accounting while holding a 3.89 GPA. She is a two-time MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honoree this year and has earned the Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award in back-to-back seasons. She is averaging 17.7 points per game this year, ranking her second in the Valley and No. 4 all-time at UNI in season scoring average. She joined the 1,000 career-point club this season, becoming the 23rd player in Panther history to score 1,000-or-more points.
UNI also had three players earn Scholar-Athlete honorable mention team with Stephanie Davison, Jen Keitel and Amber Sorenson all getting a selection. This is Davison's third consecutive season on the MVC Scholar-Athlete team with Keitel also earning Scholar-Athlete during the 2013-14 season.
Davison, a graphic technologies and graphic design major, has seen action in 28 games this season for UNI, starting in 22. She is averaging 7.4 points per game and 8.9 points per game during conference play. Davison has been active on and off the court during her career at UNI, earning the MVC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award in back-to-back seasons along with being selected to the Allstate WBCA Good Works Team this year.
Keitel is a senior double major in psychology and criminology. She has started all 29 games for UNI this season, becoming just the third player in history to score 500 points, grab 500 rebounds and notch 100 blocks in a career. She is the 24th player in school history to reach the 1,000 career point mark, now sitting with 1,027, also ranking No. 5 all-time at UNI in blocks with 100. She is averaging 10.8 points per game during MVC play, also adding 7.3 rebounds.
Sorenson rounds out UNI's Scholar-Athlete team honorees, double majoring in health promotion: wellness and fitness and health promotion: global health and health disparities. The senior has started all 29 games this season for the Panthers, averaging 13.6 points per game. She is second all-time at UNI in career three pointers made and season three-pointers made, leading the conference in treys made for the second consecutive season with 88.
The Panthers will return to action on Friday, March 11 when they compete as the No. 1 seed of the MVC Tournament. UNI will take on the winner of the Bradley/Wichita State game (plays Thursday, March 10 at 4 p.m.) at noon at the iWireless Center in Moline, Ill. For tickets, contact UNITIX at 319-273-4849.
