Baker Claims Hammer Throw Record At SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The University of Northern Iowa track and field program kicked off the 2016 outdoor season at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic today, highlighted by Justin Baker claiming a school record to open his senior campaign.
Baker won the men's hammer throw competition, coming away with a throw of 209-1.25. It surpassed his previous PR and UNI record of 206-10.00 that he set last season, also ranking him first in the conference this season.
On the women's side, the Panthers had three athletes finish in the top-five in the hammer, with Sarah Pate leading the way in third. Pate notched a mark of 172-11.75, with Jamie Lindstrom placing fourth (172-0.00) and Chloe Schmidt turning in a mark of 166-1.25 for fifth overall.
Lindstrom followed it up with a third place in the shot put, posting a toss of 48-9.75, ranking her third in the MVC. Baker also took his turn on the men's side in the shot put, placing second overall with a throw of 57-8.75.
In the discus throw, Schmidt and Issac Holtz both finished second in the men's and women's competitions. Schmidt finished with a mark of 151-4.75 to rank her second in the Valley while Holtz turned in a personal-best toss of 171-1.75 to also put him at No. 2 in the conference as well.
Moving onto the track, Brette Correy opened her outdoor season with a huge personal-best in the women's 1,500 meters, winning the race with a time of 4:37.20 to put her first in the Valley. Ashley Norem also turned in a top-five performance, finishing right behind Correy in second with a career-best of 4:38.71.
Correy kept her momentum going into the 800 meters, picking up her second win of the day with a time of 2:13.16. Dylan Eigenberger also won the men's race with an outdoor personal-best time of 1:54.68. After today's meet, both Eigenberger and Correy are sitting at No. 1 in the Valley in the 800 meters.
Raheem Black won the men's 400 meter hurdles, coming across the finish line with a time of 54.80, putting him into the top-five in the MVC. For the women, Jennifer Roberts placed third overall in the 400 hurdles, earning a time of 1:02.64.
After battling injuries during the indoor season, Christine MacNeill got back into the swing of things in the hurdles, placing second overall in the women's 100 meter hurdles, grabbing a time of 14.58. Jon Rus also picked up a second place finish on the men's side, running a time of 14.42 followed closely by true freshman Cole Phillips in third (14.68).
In the short sprints, senior Maddie Beeler captured a strong personal-best in the 200 meter dash, running a time of 24.66 for third place overall. Evan Long also recorded a personal-best on the men's side, finishing with a time of 21.93 for fourth place in the race.
Wrapping up the meet, the women's 4X400 meter relay team of Beeler, Maddie Irmen, Roberts and Theresa Connelly finished second overall with a time of 3:48.93. Austin Heitland, Brett McCalla, Long and Black comprised the men's team that placed third overall with a time of 3:17.46.
UNI will return to action next week when they participate in the Texas Relays from March 30 through April 2.
