NEW YORK – UNI wrestler Dylan Peters earned his second All-American honor with a sixth-place finish Saturday.
"It's good to be back on the podium," he said. "It was about determination and drive. I'm trying to finish out and get through it. I am ready for the road ahead."
After falling 6-4 to No. 15 David Terao of American, he medically forfeited his final match that gave him a shot at fifth place.
Peters took sixth at the NCAA Championships in 2014, but did not place last year. He sat out most of December and January with injury and was bumped into the consolations by the top seed Nathan Tomasello of Ohio State.
He fired back with two first-period falls to earn a chance to wrestle for third place.
"I was looking to wrestle back to third and then I re-tweak it. Now I am done and the season is over," said Peters. "Obviously, I feel better than last year - going 0-2. It sucks that you go and ride that wave and then it's over. Doug (Schwab) told me he had confidence in me. I bought into it 100 percent, and Mark Schwab believed in me."
Peters suffered an injury in early December, having to injury default to Ryan Millhof of Oklahoma. He avenged that loss last night, pinning Millhof in 1 minute, 3 seconds. It was his 24th first-period fall of his career.
He now has 36 career falls, which ranks him sixth among all Panthers for most career falls. Moza Fay sits in fifth with 37 career falls.
"There was something different about last night before the Rodriguez match. The fans stood up. They were loud. Doug always has a weird grin on his face, but last night, the look in his eye just pumped me. And I felt good and ready to go."
The junior returns as UNI's only All-American, finishing 18-4 on the season. He is the 33rd Panther to earn at least two All-American honors. The team tied for 25th overall, an improvement over last year's finish at 34th.
