ST. LOUIS, Mo. – University of Northern Iowa women's basketball head coach Tanya Warren has been named the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year, it was announced today.
This is Warren's third-career MVC Coach of the Year recognition after also winning the award in 2011 and 2014. UNI is 20-9 and 15-3 in league play. The Panthers claimed the regular season MVC title for the second time in Warren's career.
"This is a staff team award," Warren said. "I am extremely honored and blessed to be surrounded by amazing people. This award can't be won by an individual. It is the result of a total team effort."
The 2015-16 season marks the seventh consecutive season that UNI has won 17 or more games and is also the third time in school history that UNI has reached 20 wins. The Panthers' 15 Valley wins this year ranks second in program history, with 17 wins taking the crown during the 2010-11 season with Warren at the helm.
UNI's championship season has been headlined by attention to defense and taking care of the ball. The Panthers are ranked first in the league in scoring defense and in the top 20 in the country in assist/turnover ratio.
Under the direction of Warren, the Panthers have seen action in post-season play in five of the last six seasons, including a WNIT appearance in 2014-15. With Warren leading the way, the Panthers have won two regular season Valley titles, two MVC Tournament championships and have finished in the top-half of league standings in seven consecutive seasons.
Warren has coached seven different all-conference selections, including 2016 first-team honorees Madison Weekly and Amber Sorenson. Warren has also instilled the word "student" into her programs, finishing in the top 15 in the country in team GPA in seven of the last eight seasons, also seeing Jacqui Kalin and Weekly win MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards.
Outside of UNI, Warren was given the opportunity of a lifetime last summer after being selected to be an assistant coach for Team USA at the World University Games. She traveled to Gwangju, South Korea, where Team USA won the gold medal in the championship game against Canada.
Panther fans have gotten to see Warren achieve two coaching milestones during her time at UNI, earning her 100th career win during the 2013-14 season and her 150th against Bradley this year. She has 158 career victories in the Purple and Old Gold, tying her for No. 10 in Missouri Valley history for all-time coaching wins.
UNI will take on Bradley in its first game of the MVC Tournament Fri., March 11, at noon in the iWireless Center in Moline, Ill.
