UNI Names January Student-Athletes of Month

This months' honorees are Blaize Cabell (Independence, Iowa), Veronica Herrmann (Bismarck, N.D.), Isaac Holtz (Monticello, Iowa) and Amber Sorenson (Caledonia, Minn.).
Blaize Cabell - Wrestling
Senior heavyweight Blaize Cabell is the scoring leader in team duals for wrestling. He scored bonus points in four of his six matches in January. He went 5-1 in duals, staying perfect in conference competition. He notched two falls, pinning Northern Illinois' Arthur Bunce in 2 minutes, 27 seconds and Andrew Snyder of Old Dominion in 4:35. He also recorded 11 take downs and earned nearly four minutes of riding time to beat Jesse Webb of Ohio by tech fall. He won 15-5 to earn a major decision over Newton Smerchek of Central Michigan. He beat Gage Hutchinson of Eastern Michigan in a 9-4 decision to kick off the month. Cabell is ranked 16th in the nation by the NCAA. He is from Independence, Iowa, and majoring in earth science.
Veronica Herrmann - Women's Swimming and Diving
In the three meets during January, junior Veronica Herrmann continued an impressive march through her junior season. In competition against MVC opponents Illinois State, Veronica Herrmann took first place in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke events. She swam to a time of 1:05.36 in the 100 and a time of 2:22.96 in the 200. Herrmann would team up with Molly Lembezeder, Madison Rinaldi, and Crystal Florman for a time of 1:46.45 in the 200 Medley Relay. Against Quincy University, Herrmann took first and second places respectively in the 100 Butterfly, with a time of 1:04.08. Herrmann also teamed up with Rachel Siebenaller, Aftin Phyfe, and Molly Lembezeder kicked the day off with a second place finish in the 400 Medley Relay, with a time of 4:21.30. In competition against Iowa State, Herrmann was just shy of second place in the 200 breaststroke, with a time of 2:25.49. However, the 200-yard medley relay squad of Herrmann, Madison Rinaldi, Crystal Florman and Molly Lembezeder swam a 1:47.75, edging out Iowa State, which had a time of 1:47.81.Â
Isaac Holtz - Men's Track and Field
Isaac Holtz shined in the men's throws at the Mark Messersmith Invitational, turning in personal-records in both the weight throw and shot put. Holtz won the weight throw with a mark of 59-5.00, also picking up a win in the shot put with a PR throw of 55-2.75. Both marks ranked him in the top-five in the Missouri Valley Conference.Â
Amber Sorenson - Women's Basketball
Amber Sorenson reached double-digit scoring in eight of UNI's nine games during the month of January, averaging 13.3 points, 28.7 minutes, 4.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game. She notched her second-career double-double in UNI's win over Wichita State (1/8), scoring 10 points and bringing in 10 rebounds while adding a season-high three blocks. Against Loyola (1/29), she shot 67-percent from the field, 71-percent from the three and finished the game with 19 points and eight boards.Â
