CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Three Northern Iowa volleyball players have made the trip to Colorado Springs, Colorado, with the goal of qualifying for the U.S. Collegiate National Team and the USA women's National Team.
Kayla Haneline, Amie Held and Piper Thomas will be competing today for spots. All three are in the red group scheduled to try out from 3 to 4:50 p.m. CT.
Held is a junior who is libero/hitter for the Panthers. As one of the Panthers' most versatile players, she has exceled at both positons. For the Colorado Springs tryout, Held will be focusing on the libero and defensive specialist position.
Haneline is a junior middle hitter for the Panthers. A consistent force for the Panthers, Haneline was named to the preseason all-MVC squad in 2015. Haneline participated in the same tryout in 2014 and looks to build upon a strong performance.
Thomas is a freshman middle hitter. Thomas is trying out for the team following a strong freshman season. Her career high in kills is 16 against Evansville and scored 18.5 points against Evansville.
Selections for the collegiate national teams are expected by the end of March. Upon qualification of the Collegiate Team, the players will tour China from June 18 to July 1, Europe from July 5-16 or the Junior National Championships in Indianapolis form June 21-30.
