UNI Runs Win Streak to Five With 83-69 Victory

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa men's basketball squad recorded its fifth consecutive victory with an 83-69 triumph over the Missouri State Bears Wednesday in the McLeod Center.
UNI (15-11 overall, 7-6 MVC) had four players reach double-figure scoring led by junior Jeremy Morgan's career-high 21 points. Senior Matt Bohannon and sophomore Bennett Koch each tallied 19 points. Senior Wes Washpun chipped in with 11 points and a game-high nine assists.
Bohannon scored 14 of his 19 points in the first half as he become the 39th member of UNI's 1,000-point scoring club. Bohannon has scored 1,005 points in 128 career games.
The Panthers handed out 18 assists to go against only three turnovers in the contest. UNI also outrebounded Missouri State, 33-32.
The Bears (10-15 overall, 6-7 MVC) were led by Chris Kendrix with 20 points and Jarred Dixon with 15 points. Kendrix added a team-best eight rebounds.
UNI came out firing by making its first four three-point shots to lift the Panthers to a 20-10 lead seven minutes into the contest. Bohannon added his second three-pointer of the first half with 11:50 on the clock to give UNI a 14-point bulge at 27-13. The Panthers would lead 49-38 at the break having shot 52.9 percent from the floor with 13 assists and zero turnovers.
Missouri State trimmed the UNI lead to three points at 61-58 with 9:33 left in the game following a three-pointer by Loomis Gerring. But the Panthers responded with a 13-0 run to take a 74-58 lead with 5:48 left on the clock. Koch would slam in a putback with 4:29 remaining to give UNI an 18-point lead at 78-60.
UNI will travel to Wichita State Saturday to take on the nationally-ranked Shockers in Koch Arena. Tip is set for 11 a.m. in Wichita, Kan. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
NOTES: UNI matched its season-high five-game winning streak ... UNI is 41-5 when scoring 80 or more points under head coach Ben Jacobson ... UNI has won eight straight when scoring 80 or more, including a perfect 7-0 mark this season ... Jacobson recorded his 110th career MVC victory moving him into a tie for No. 8 on the MVC wins list with Bradley's Jim Molinari ... Jacobson also moved his overall win total to 212, which moved him past Drake's Maury John for 8th on the league's all-time wins list in all games ... Wes Washpun's nine assists moved him into a tie for No. 7 on UNI's all-time assist list with Ben Jacobson (2002-2006), as each Panther has 357 career assists ... Washpun has 148 assists on the season and moved up to No. 3 on UNI's best single-season assist chart ... Jeremy Morgan recorded his second career 20-point scoring game - his previous best of 20 came in the season opener vs. Colorado State.
