CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Former UNI running back and current NFL star David Johnson has been selected to his first-career Pro Bowl, it was announced yesterday. Johnson will play on the NFC roster alongside teammates Larry Fitzgerald and Patrick Peterson.
Johnson, a standout athlete for the Arizona Cardinals, was voted into the Pro Bowl by the consensus votes of fans, players and coaches. Panther fans had no doubt that Johnson would excel in the league, turning in an outstanding rookie campaign, but his second year in the NFL has been something to remember.
He has rushed for over 1,000 yards and is just 200 yards short of 1,000 yards receiving with two game to go in the season. He became the first player in NFL history to have 100 yards from scrimmage in each of the first 14 games of the season, breaking the record this past Sunday. The Clinton, Iowa, native has racked up 17 touchdowns, tying the Cardinals record set by John David Crow (1962).
Johnson is the third UNI alum to be selected to the Pro Bowl, joining Bryce Paup and Kurt Warner. He is also the first Cardinals running back to make it to the all-star game since 1990. Johnson has 30 touchdowns in 30 career games over the course of two seasons.
The Pro Bowl will take place in Orlando, Fla. at Camping World Stadium on Sunday, Jan. 29. It will be televised live at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN. It will feature a return of the traditional AFC vs. NFC game format following three years using a revised "unconferenced" format.
Johnson was a four-time All-American at UNI and before he was breaking records in the NFL, he was shattering them as a Panther. He still holds the UNI records for single-season and career rushing yards, single-season and career all-purpose yards, single-season and career touchdowns scored and career rushing touchdowns.
