CoSIDA Release
AUSTIN, Texas – Senior defensive end Karter Schult has been named to the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America Division I Football Team, earning first-team honors for the second consecutive season.
Schult, who is majoring in movement and exercise science, is one of 24 student-athletes that were named to the Academic All-America first-team, with the team averaging a 3.82 GPA. The Tripoli, Iowa, native is also one of 13 student-athletes who are two-time Academic All-America choices and one of seven who garnered first-team nods two seasons in a row.
He is the first UNI football player to earn Academic All-America first-team twice in his career in program history. The senior is also a three-time MVFC President's Academic Excellence Award and Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award winner and is a two-time MVFC Scholar-Athlete first-team selection.
Schult is currently a finalist for three different national awards, two being academic. He is a finalist for the STATS FCS Buck Buchanan Award, given to the best defensive player in FCS football along with the STATS FCS Doris Robinson Award, awarded to the best all-around student-athlete in the FCS.
He is also a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, an award that has been deemed the "Academic Heisman" by many, recognizing a student-athlete as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation.
Schult wrapped up his collegiate career ranked first all-time in career tackles for loss (65.0), yards from tackles for loss (266), yards from sacks (215) and quarterback hurries (20). He is second in career sacks with 35.5 and set new single-season records in sacks and tackles for loss in 2016 with 17.0 and 24.0, respectively.
His single-season sack total ranked him first in all of Division I football to end the regular season and tied him for second in tackles for loss. He also tied a single-game record for tackles for loss with his 5.5 against top-15 ranked Montana.
Schult recorded at least one sack in 10 of UNI's 11 games in 2016, finishing third on the team in total tackles with 69. He added four quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles, his first-career interception, a blocked kick and a safety.
The William V. Campbell Trophy Award winner will be announced on Dec. 6 at the 59th annual NFF Awards Dinner.
