ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Senior Karter Schult and redshirt freshman Sam Drysdale were honored today after earning conference player of the week honors.
Schult was named the MVFC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season while Drysdale earned MVFC Special Teams Player of the Week. It was Drysdale's first-career player of the week honor after getting his first action in a Panther uniform in UNI's 39-6 win over Indiana State on Saturday.
Drysdale, a redshirt freshman out of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, scored four field goals in his first collegiate football game, going 4-for-4 and 1-for-1 from PAT. He is the first UNI kicker to knock in four field goals in a game since Michael Schmadeke converted four against Eastern Illinois in the playoffs last season.
He recorded a 27-yarder in the third quarter, followed by a collegiate career-long 40-yard field goal to end the same quarter. Drysdale scored the last nine points of the game for the Panthers, including his 28 and 31-yard field goals in the fourth quarter.
On the defensive side of the ball, Schult anchored the UNI defensive line that allowed just 88 yards on the ground against the Sycamores. The Tripoli, Iowa, native racked up eight tackles, including 2.5 sacks that counted for tackles for loss as well.
His 2.5 sacks gives him 13 on the season, tying him for sixth all-time in season sacks with the senior already tied for second all-time in season sacks after his 15.0 in 2015. His sack total against Indiana State gives him 31.5 in his career, moving him into third all-time in career sacks, passing Andre Allen who had 31.0 from 1991-94.
Schult, Drysdale and the Panthers return to action on Saturday, Nov. 12 when they take on Western Illinois on the road. The game is set for a 1 p.m. kick.
