STATS – Senior defensive lineman Karter Schult is one of 25 finalists for the 22nd annual STATS FCS Buck Buchanan Award, the highest individual honor for a defensive player in the FCS.
Schult is one of three student-athletes that have been invited to the 2016 STATS FCS Awards Banquet and Presentation on Jan. 6 in Frisco, Texas. Missouri State linebacker Dylan Cole and P.J. Hall of Sam Houston State will join Schult at the award banquet.
A national panel of over 150 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries voted on the Buchanan Award, named for the legendary defensive lineman from Grambling State. Schult is one of 25 total finalists from 13 FCS conferences.
Schult is the sixth UNI football player to be named a finalist for the award, including Deiondre' Hall who finished fifth in the voting in 2015. The 2016 MVFC Defensive Player of the Year started all 11 games this season, leading all of Division I football in sacks and finishing tied for second in tackles for loss.
He is a two-time All-MVFC first-team honoree and two-time Scholar-Athlete first-team selection at UNI. He also earned three MVFC Player of the Week nods this season.
His 17.0 sacks in 2016 ranks second all-time in single-season quarterback sacks while his 24.0 tackles for loss beat the UNI record of 23.0 that he set in 2015. The Tripoli, Iowa, native recorded at least one sack in 10 of the 11 games. Along with his single-season records in 2016, Schult tied the school record for tackles for loss in a game with 5.5 against #14 Montana.
He finished third on the team in total tackles with 69, leading all defensive linemen in the league in the category. Along with his towering sack and tackle for loss total, Schult also racked up four quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles, a blocked kick, a safety and his first-career interception.
Schult finished his career at UNI ranked first all-time in career tackles for loss (56.0), yards from tackles for loss (266), yards from sacks (215) and quarterback hurries (20). He also ranks second in career sacks with 35.5.
