UNI Wrestling Signs Geerts and Holschlag for 2017-18

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI wrestling signed two top recruits from Northeast Iowa to join the Panthers for the 2016-17 season.
Keaton Geerts and Derek Holschlag signed National Letters of Intent today.
Geerts of New Hampton, Iowa, is coming off a state championship at 132 pounds in Iowa's Class 2A in 2016. He was New Hampton's first champion since 2007 and lost just one match, finishing 51-1.
He also won the Junior Freestyle and Greco State championships at 132 pounds in 2016. He won the same freestyle tournament at 126 pounds in 2015. He placed second in the 2015 Greco Roman division in 2015.
He finished fifth at 120 pounds at the 2015 state meet. In 2014, he was fifth at the Iowa / USA Kids / Cadets Freestyle tournament.
Geerts finished seventh at the USA Wrestling / Cliff Keen / Folkstyle tournament at 126 pounds in the Cadet class.
Geerts is also a two-time letter winner in football. He made the 2016 first team all-district team as a running back. He racked up 1,070 rushing yards this season. He is tied with the most season wins in New Hampton school history.
Every week, Geerts does a lot of volunteering, working with youth in football and wrestling and making visits to a retirement facility.
Holschlag of La Porte City, Iowa, will join his older brother and Panther wrestler, Jacob, after UNI upon graduation from Union High School. Holschlag recently finished fifth in the 138-pound weight class at the Cliff Keen USA Preseason Nationals.
Derek Holschlag
He took third at the 2016 Iowa High School State championships at 132 pounds in class 2A at 132 pounds. He was second at the state championships in 2015 at 113 pounds. The three-time state medalist started his prep career at 106 pounds.
He moved up to 113 pounds and took sixth at the USA Wrestling / Cliff Keen Jr/Cadet Folkstyle Tournament in 2014. He was fourth at the Iowa / USA Kids / Cadet Freestyle tourney.

Geerts and Holschlag join Jack Skudlarczyk of Austin, Texas, who signed last week.
