ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Senior defensive end Karter Schult was named the MVFC Defensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, it was announced by the league office.
Schult was key in UNI's win over No. 17-ranked Western Illinois on Saturday. He turned in one of the most complete games of the day, anchoring the defensive line that only allowed 96 rushing yards, the third game in the last four that UNI has held its opponent under 100 yards on the ground.
Schult racked up six total tackles, finishing with 4.0 tackles for loss. Three of his tackles for loss were sacks, giving him 16 this season. His 16 sacks this year rank him second all-time at UNI in single-season quarterback sacks, passing himself with 15 in 2015. He also has 34.5 in his career, moving him up to No. 2 in career sacks, passing Matt Mitchell (2000-03) who had 33.0.
The senior wanted to get his hand in on everything in UNI's victory on Saturday, also forcing a fumble and blocking a PAT in the third quarter. His blocked extra point was the first in his career.
Schult and the Panthers are back in the UNI-Dome this week when they take on No. 11 South Dakota State Sat., Nov. 19, for Senior Day. The game is set for a 4 p.m. kick on MVFC TV and ESPN3.
