IRVING, Texas – University of Northern Iowa defensive end Karter Schult has been named a finalist for the 2016 William V. Campbell Trophy. The award recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation.
Schult is one of 12 finalists for the prestigious award and will receive a $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete Class. He will get to travel to New York City for the 59th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 6, where his accomplishments will be highlighted in front of one of the most powerful audiences in all of sports.
At the event, one member of the class will be declared the winner of the 27th William V. Campbell Trophy and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000. Schult was selected from a nationwide pool of 156 semifinalists from among all NCAA divisions and the NAIA.
Schult was named a semifinalist in September, becoming the eighth Panther in UNI history to be named a semifinalist. The Tripoli, Iowa, native is just the second UNI student-athlete to be named a finalist, joining Josh Mahoney who was a finalist in 2009.
Schult is an All-American on and off the field, earning first-team Academic All-American and STATs All-American in 2015. He is majoring in movement and exercise science while maintaining a 3.87 GPA. He is a two-time recipient of the MVFC President's Academic Excellence Award, a three-time MVFC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award selection and a four-time MVFC Honor Roll member.
The team captain has played in 48 games as a Panther, ranking first all-time in career tackles for loss (48) and fourth in sacks (29.0). He also set the single-season school record for tackles for loss in a season (23 in 2015) and single-game (5.5 vs. Montana in 2016).
Through eight games in 2016, Schult has racked up 10.5 sacks, leading all of Division I football in the category. He is second on the team in tackles this season with 53, ranking No. 6 in the country in tackles for loss with 16 for a loss of 71 yards. His 48 career tackles for loss has resulted in 222 loss of yards for his opponents, setting a UNI record for career yards from TFLs.
Off the field, Schult is an avid volunteer with the Cedar Valley Boys and Girls Club, working 30-plus hours with the organization and helping kids with reading comprehension and sports. He has volunteered as a mentor at Bremwood Correctional Facility and helped with UNI Dance Marathon to benefit the Children's Miracle Network. He served as a volunteer coach for area football and baseball teams and assisted with Northeast Iowa Special Olympics.
