Panthers Score 3-1 Win Over Sycamores

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa evened its Missouri Valley Conference mark with a 3-1 triumph over the Indiana State Sycamores on Monday in the McLeod Center. UNI won by set scores of 25-12, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19.
The Panthers (12-7 overall, 3-3 MVC) got a double-double from senior Amie Held with 18 kills and 20 digs. Sophomore libero Kendyl Sorge produced her third straight 29-dig effort to help the defensive cause against the Sycamores (7-9 overall, 1-3 MVC). Kayla Haneline also produced a .522 hitting percentage with 13 kills and only one attack error.
UNI seized control of the opening set with a decisive 11-0 run to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 14-4 lead. UNI had a 75 percent sideout percentage in the first set and hit .273 to lead it to a 25-12 win. Indiana State hit a paltry .026 with six kills and five attack errors.
UNI increased its lead to 2-0 with a 25-22 win in the second set. UNI moved the needle higher on its hitting percentage in the second set (.302) with 18 kills and five attack errors. Indiana State held a 15-13 lead, but the Panthers used a 9-4 run to take a 22-17 advantage.
Indiana State refused to go quietly into the night and responded with a 25-21 win in the third set. The Sycamores used a .204 hitting percentage with 12 kills and only two attack errors in the set. UNI dipped to a .070 hitting percentage by committing nine errors. UNI netted a 50-percent sideout effort in the set.
The Panthers would close out the victory in the fourth set with a 25-19 win. Held came up big in the final set with seven kills and a .400 hitting percentage. UNI hit .270 as a team in the set with 16 kills.
UNI will be in action again at 7 p.m. Saturday at Drake in the Knapp Center.
NOTES: UNI is 30-0 all-time at home against Indiana State ... it was Held's team-leading 10th double-double of the season and her 24th career double-double ... Heather Hook secured her fourth double-double of the season (15th of her career) with 49 assists and 14 digs ... Piper Thomas notched a season-high tying 15 kills (one off her career-high) ... UNI tied a season-high with eight service aces.
