Eyes of a Champion: Previewing the 2016-17 Season

Expect More: the motto of the 2015-16 UNI swimming and diving team. Expecting more than what they had accomplished previously. If you followed the team last year, you saw the records being shattered and the third place finish by the team at the conference championship meet. Add in senior divers returning to the NCAA Zone "D" Diving Championships, NCAA B cuts and record-breaking conference swims, the 2015-16 swimming and diving team accomplished more than they expected.
Â
"We hit the ground running with our eyes on the prize from the start," said Molly Lembezeder about the 2015-16 season.
Â
Lembezeder is a current record holder. Last year, she even broke one of her own records from the 2014-15 season.
"Every year has been a building year and people have been noticing," said Aftin Phyfe, a senior captain.
The UNI team returns student-athletes who were placing in the top 16 at meets, including the top three in relays. Phyfe and Lembezeder teamed up with Crystal Florman and Autumn Roepsch to create a new Missouri Valley Conference record in the 400 freestyle relay, clocking in at 3:23.56. Phyfe and Lembezeder each broke personal records at conference.
Â
"We are not satisfied," Lembezeder said on this season's success.
Junior diver Hannah Brummel echoed Lembezeder saying "We will come out as a force this season." '
The freshmen are bringing in new energy and are expected to make a huge splash in the pool, but the upperclassmen aren't planning on backing down from their spots.
"We return a talented and decorated group of upperclassmen and bring in a group of freshmen that will immediate impacts in dual meets and in our conference," said head coach Doug Humphrey.
"There was a hunger stirred in us," comments Brummel as she prepares for another season of diving. Hard work, dedication and the expectation of more led the 2015-16 team to a third place finish, the highest in recent years. Now, they have the eyes of a champion.
Â
Catch Brummel , Phyfe, Lembezeder and the rest of the UNI swimming and diving team as they open up their home season, 5 p.m. Oct. 21 in the Glen F. Henry pool.
