UNI Honors September Student-Athletes of Month

This months' honorees are Ashley Norem (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale HS), Kendyl Sorge (Janesville, Iowa/Janesville HS), Karter Schult (Tripoli, Iowa/Tripoli HS) and Bailey Wetherell (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West HS).
Ashley Norem - Cross Country
Ashley Norem has led the way for the Panther women during the 2016 cross country season, being UNI's highest finisher at all three meets in September. The junior currently has the fastest time in the Missouri Valley Conference in the 6K. She ran the second-fastest time of her career in the 6,000 meters at the Badger Classic, coming in fourth overall with a time of 21:59.60. Her most impressive finish of the season so far was at the Notre Dame Invite, finishing 17th overall in a competition that fielded 222 athletes. She recorded a time of 17:40.00 in the 5K to rank in the top-10 in the MVC and No. 6 all-time at UNI.Â
Kendyl Sorge - Volleyball
Sorge led the Panther volleyball squad with 259 digs (4.98/set) in the month of September. Sorge was named the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 12 after she put on a defensive display with a team-best 49 digs (4.90/set) in UNI's three matches against Omaha, UMKC and Kansas. Sorge was credited with a career-high 35 digs in UNI's 3-2 win over Iowa State (Sept. 13). Sorge contributed six 20-plus dig performances in the month of September.
Karter Schult - Football
Preseason All-American Karter Schult started his senior campaign on a roll, racking up 12 tackles for loss in just three games in September. The senior is the first player in the Mark Farley era to have 12 tackles for loss through just three games. He opened 2016 with four solo tackles against Iowa State that included 3.0 tackles for loss, two of which were sacks. He followed it up with a career-high tying 10 tackles against one of the top-ranked offenses in the country, Montana. He had eight solo tackles against the Grizzlies, and broke the school record for tackles for loss in a game with 5.5. The Tripoli, Iowa native added seven tackles against Eastern Washington to wrap up the month of September.Â
Bailey Wetherell - Men's Cross Country
Bailey Wetherall was the Panther men's top finisher at all three meets during the month of September. He opened his season with an 18th place finish out of 90 runners at the Hawkeye Invite, recording a time of 18:41.60 in the 6K. He led the men's team to a third place finish at the Badger Classic, placing sixth with a time of 19:08.70. He wrapped up the month with top-50 finish in a field of 183 student-athletes at the Notre Dame Invite, placing 42nd overall with a time of 25:32.80 in the 8K.Â
